V&A: Ballgowns
British Glamour since 1950
I recently went to the Ballgown exhibition at the V&A and although there were some incredible dresses from the last 60 years, the exhibition as a whole was quite disapointing.
There didn't seem to be much of a logical order to the display and the only thing which seemed to group the dresses was a colour theme. There was also very little information about who the dresses had been made for and for what event. With couture ballgowns being such a symbol of the event and identity of weare it would have been much more fitting to know this infromation and even see images of the wearer in dress.
"Carefully chosen for one special occasion, a ballgown should not only flatter
the wearer and demonstrate her sense of style but also illustrate an
understanding of the significance of the event to which it is worn"
